In a typical knee-jerk over-reaction of "something must be done", Asda refused to sell a 70-year-old lemons because yobs had reportedly been throwing them at people.
I'm speechless.
Richard Littlejohn has it:
Asda refused to sell Mail reader, 70, two lemons after reports of yobs throwing them at peopleUpdate: I say boycott ASDA and let them know why you're doing it!
Supermarkets seem to take leave of their senses when it comes to proof of identity and elf 'n' safety.
Asda in Aberdeen refused to sell Mail reader Chris Pether two individual lemons.
A supervisor explained that the policy had been introduced to protect the public because local yobs had been known to throw lemons at people.
You can still buy lemons in packs of ten because they are smaller and therefore less dangerous.
Also, a ten-pack is apparently too expensive for your average Aberdonian oik.
Incidentally, Chris is 70. You couldn't make it up.

ASDA done right.
You can't just not sell lemons to tossers - that would smack of inequality.
Trebor Fillips would be all over 'em.
Steve
Life giving you lemons? Make lemonade...
Steve, lemons don't fart. Surely that's OK then?
Indeed, Henry. Boycott ASDA!
So why were ASDA offering single lemons for sale if they weren't going to sell them ?
As you suggest, we, Mr Pether and everyone he knows should boycott ASDA. I'm sure the convenience stores will be pleased.
From their 'blog'
"Lee from Ashington says:
I’m 24 and got asked for ID, fine, I showed my driving licence. The checkout operator still refused to serve me as I was under 25!!!
I go elsewhere for my shopping now. "
LOLOL. Fair play to ASDA, most of the few comments are negative but they have left them up.
Good question, banned! Where do these idiotic policies come from? ASDA top brass? Why would any cashier bother with ID unless so instructed by management?
And what do they get out of complying with what is obviously loony government policy?
IS it "Goverment" policy though?
Where does it say in a "Government" document that people under 21 can not buy lemons?, where does it say they can not buy EVERYTHING that the shop sells, including cases pf beer and vodka, once they are over 18?
Although I am the first to put the blame for ANYTHING, from taxes to the eruption of Krakatoa, this one falls dirrectly at the feet of the bosses, and we all know what a shower of imbicilic twats bosses can be.
Or not even OVER 18. When they ARE 18.
I suspect they're hindered by health and safety regulations which have been over-egged by this government, FT.
Good point about 18!
