LibDem polls only 2% above UKIP: Might UKIP be kingmaker?

"The YouGov survey put Nick Clegg's party on seven per cent, a fall from the 23 per cent backing they got at the general election. Labour is on 43 per cent, with the Tories on 39 per cent."

ConHome crunches the numbers and surmises that were the LibDems and the Cons to join forces, Labour would win. Given that UKIP polled 5%, what if the Tories were to join forces with UKIP?  Might not the whole be greater than the sum of the parts?

I think UKIP did cost the Tories a majority. If they could convince UKIP not to stand in exchange for a pledge to hold a referendum on continued membership of the EU, who can say? In five years' time, if we've seen some measure of recovery, maybe.

The question is, Macx, can the Tories be trusted on promises they make?

Were UKIP to make a deal with the Tories, I would hope that they'd codify their agreement such that should the Tories regege, UKIP would have serious recourse to the law.

I doubt that UKIP members would countenance another behind-the-scenes negotiation with the Tories. Were any talks to take place, they would have to be public, not least because UKIP would need the public to bear witness.
